Diversity Champion Award for Education Sector

Drew Dalton is a Sociologist/Lecturer in Social Sciences at the University of Sunderland. He has worked in the voluntary and education sectors for a number of years, including roles with disadvantaged young people, children and adults, sexual health and HIV and AIDS. Drew has made a huge impact within the University and was instrumental in influencing the HR team in developing a HIV Staff policy. In conjunction with this, Drew trained staff on HIV Awareness along with students, which has now become an annual event. He also created Positive Allies, a charter mark for UK based employers to sign up to, to show that they are ‘HIV friendly’ to their existing and potential employees. He is the founder of HIV organisation Thrive NE, as well as LGBT History Project NE, which has grown to 636 members and offers public talks, debate evenings, school outreach and teacher training.
