SUMMARY:AI’s Hidden Bias: How It Disadvantages Women\, People of Colour & the Working Class
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Veronika Pickford \nThis talk explores the growing inequalities being shaped and deepened by artificial intelligence. While AI will create new roles\, the reality is that displacement is inevitable. It’s important to begin conversations about the shifts already taking place\, understand who is most likely to be affected and explore how these insights can help inform and strengthen our EDI strategies. \nWomen\, people of colour and those from working-class and low-income backgrounds are disproportionately represented in sectors such as administration\, retail and manual labour — areas most vulnerable to automation. As these roles are increasingly replaced or reshaped by AI\, the risk of job loss and economic insecurity will fall hardest on those already facing systemic disadvantage. \nWe’ll also explore how bias in AI systems replicates and reinforces existing social and racial inequalities in hiring tools that systematically disadvantage certain groups. Access to upskilling\, digital education and reskilling opportunities often remains out of reach for many\, widening the gap between those who can adapt to a tech-driven future and those who are left behind. \nAll organisations have a responsibility to stay informed and act — not only by reviewing their technologies and processes\, but by taking practical steps to support their people\, redistribute talent across the business and future-proof the utilisation of labour in a fair and equitable way. \nAbout the facilitator \nVeronika Pickford (she/her)\nUKI Diversity and Inclusion Manager \n\nSPS Global \nI’ve made it my mission to create work environments that enable people to thrive. I am a dedicated advocate for social justice & change\, a firm believer in the transformative power of diversity and a passionate architect of inclusive environments. What drives me every day is a vision of a workplace where everyone can bring their authentic selves to work\, thrive and contribute to their fullest potential. Within my role\, I’ve had the privilege of translating these beliefs into impactful actions leading to a more engaged\, better performing and committed workforce.
