Diversity Champion Award for Education Sector

Julie has recently been appointed the first black Director of the School of Acting at ArtsEd, and starts this post in Jan 2019. Currently, at St Mary’s University she is the first black female Head of Drama in HE, looking after 257 students, 8 staff and over 50 academic and technical visiting professionals. As an educator, Julie has worked tirelessly to develop a curriculum and working environment that is culturally pluralistic by diversifying the content and teaching staff to ensure inclusivity. At St Mary’s she coordinates Drama admissions, implementing inclusive practice to make the University application process more accessible and less daunting. In 3 years, there has been an incredible 30% increase in students of colour winning places on the course. Additionally, her work has seen 100% retention rate and 100% result in good honours for students of colour.
