Stereotypically, the construction industry is seen as a male dominated industry, characterised by long working hours, difficult site conditions and a culture which historically has not always been appealing to those who want to balance family life with a career, or where those not from a traditional white-male background have felt that they can be included. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has sought to address these stereotypes and implement positive changes via a clear strategy aimed at creating a balanced, family-friendly and diverse culture that will encourage all groups into and/or to stay within the construction and infrastructure industry. The main aim of their strategy is that improvements are open to all. Changes have included implementing a ‘People Board’, enhanced policies reflecting the company’s overall diverse approach, awareness raising and communication campaign to affect a shift in attitude and designing a gender-neutral returnship programme.
