Steve Whitmore

ICA18 Shortlisted Nominee.

Diversity Champion Award for Charity Sector

Steve has made an outstanding contribution to the welfare and integration of minority communities into mainstream British society over the 28 years of voluntary service he has given to our armed forces, civilian charities and as a Special Constable for the Metropolitan Police Service. On each and every occasion Steve has gone the extra mile by initiating and developing practical projects that have helped bring communities together. Since 1991, Steve has volunteered over 4,500 hours to community projects at the Central YMCA. His desire to help others knows no bounds and in 2015, he came up with the idea of ‘Books in the Nick’; providing free books to all detainees in police custody. In just two years ‘Books in the Nick’ is now present in every one of the 43 Metropolitan Police Service active custody suits and over 10,000 books and magazines have been given to 39,000 detainees aged 12-18.
