This report highlights United Utilities’ commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion through its comprehensive strategies and initiatives, reflecting its dedication to creating an inclusive environment for employees and the communities it serves.

Leadership Commitment to EDI

  • CEO Louise Beardmore has reinforced United Utilities’ EDI agenda by championing initiatives that support a diverse and welcoming environment for all employees. Adrienne McFarland, People Director, emphasises the importance of inclusivity through regular updates to the executive board on EDI goals and achievements. Notably, 89% of employees reported in 2024 that United Utilities supports diversity and inclusion, highlighting the positive impact of these efforts​.
  • The executive team actively drives EDI action plans, which include monitoring diversity metrics and supporting employee networks. Each network is sponsored by senior executives who participate in promoting inclusivity and provide mentorship, creating a direct link between the workforce and senior leadership​.

Inclusion in Organisational Policies and Training

  • United Utilities places a strong emphasis on dignity and respect, with EDI training integrated into induction and management development programmes. Managers receive training on Inclusive Leadership, disability awareness and mental health, ensuring they are well-equipped to support diverse teams. Additionally, the company’s policies include enhanced family leave options, flexible working from day one and a range of support resources​.
  • United Utilities is a Disability Confident Employer and has implemented measures to enhance workplace accessibility. Managers complete a reasonable adjustments assessment to address employees’ needs and all company buildings are designed with accessibility in mind. Specific initiatives include neurodiversity training, British Sign Language interpreters and dedicated support for neurodiverse and disabled colleagues​.
