West Midlands Fire Service, the second-largest fire and rescue service in the UK, has once again earned a high-ranking position in the Inclusive Top 50 UK Employers Report for 2024/25 coming in at fifth. Its unwavering commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion is reflected in innovative practices, comprehensive policies and community-focused initiatives. This report outlines the achievements that establish West Midlands Fire Service as a leader in workplace inclusivity.
Leadership Commitment to EDI
- CEO Oliver Lee OBE has consistently prioritised EDI, describing it as integral to the service’s identity. His leadership focuses on creating a zero-tolerance culture for harassment, bullying and discrimination and he is a vocal advocate for inclusivity for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities and neurodiversity.
- The Senior Leadership Team actively champions EDI through the Inclusion Roadmap, which outlines annual EDI projects. The Assistant Chief Fire Officer chairs the Cultural Improvement Steering Group which captures workforce and stakeholder insights to shape the service’s future direction.
Policies and Awareness Campaigns
- West Midlands Fire Service has published several key policies, including Equality & Diversity, Dignity at Work, Safeguarding and a specialised Transgender Guidance Policy. These are widely disseminated through the intranet, training and induction programmes for new starters.
- Updates to the Dignity at Work Policy now address issues such as gaslighting and microaggressions. Middle managers receive guides on neurodiversity, gender identity and positive action to ensure inclusivity at every organisational level.
